Choosing an Executor
An executor is the person named in your Will who is responsible for administering your estate after your death. Choosing the right executor is one of the most important decisions in your estate planning process.
Legal Requirements in Singapore
In Singapore, an executor must:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Be of sound mind at the time of acting
- Not be an undischarged bankrupt (though a court may still grant probate in some cases)
Who Should You Choose?
Family Members
Many people choose a spouse, adult child, or sibling. This is cost-effective and keeps estate administration within the family. However, ensure the person has the capacity and willingness to take on the role.
Professional Executors
Professional executors — such as solicitors, licensed trust companies, or banks — offer:
- Legal and financial expertise
- Impartiality, especially in complex or disputed estates
- Reliability and accountability
Public Trustee
The Public Trustee of Singapore can act as executor for estates meeting specific criteria. This is a government service available for smaller, less complex estates.
Number of Executors
You may appoint up to four executors in Singapore. Only up to four can act at any one time, though you can name substitutes.
Key Duties of a Singapore Executor
- Locating and filing the Will with the appropriate court
- Applying for a Grant of Probate at the Family Justice Courts
- Collecting and safeguarding estate assets
- Paying outstanding debts and liabilities
- Filing and paying estate duty (if applicable)
- Distributing assets according to the Will
CPF and Insurance
Note that CPF savings and insurance proceeds with nominated beneficiaries do not form part of the estate and are distributed separately. Your executor does not control these assets.

- Always ask the person before naming them as executor
- Keep your executor informed of the location of your Will and important documents
- Review your executor choice regularly, especially after major life changes
